Tuzla International Airport (TZL) is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's key airports, located near the city of Živinice in the Tuzla Canton. The airport is undergoing a dramatic transformation: after Wizz Air reopened its base in December 2025 with two Airbus A321neo aircraft and nine new routes, Tuzla is projected to handle up to 760,000–800,000 passengers in 2026 — more than double the 338,132 handled in 2025. Wizz Air is now the dominant carrier, with routes to Cologne, Hamburg, Maastricht, Malmö, Berlin, Frankfurt, Gothenburg, Larnaca, and Paris, alongside existing connections to Istanbul via Pegasus Airlines and AJet.
If your flight at Tuzla Airport was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you are protected by EC 261/2004. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a signatory to the ECAA Agreement, which means every flight departing from Tuzla International Airport is covered by European air passenger rights. You can claim up to €600 per person.
This guide covers Tuzla airport flight delays, Tuzla airport cancellations, the specific challenges of this rapidly growing airport, and how FlyPayout handles your claim.
Tuzla International Airport is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, an ECAA signatory. EC 261 applies to all flights departing from TZL, regardless of which airline operates them. This includes Wizz Air (Malta), Pegasus Airlines (Turkey), AJet (Turkey), and any other carrier.
Wizz Air is registered in Malta (EU), meaning its flights are covered in both directions. Pegasus Airlines and AJet are Turkish carriers — their flights from Tuzla are covered by EC 261 because TZL is a European airport, but return flights from Istanbul fall under Turkey's SHY-Passenger regulation.
| Flight distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Common routes from Tuzla and their compensation amounts:
| Route | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Tuzla – Cologne | ~1,150 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Hamburg | ~1,350 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Berlin | ~1,100 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Frankfurt | ~1,100 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Maastricht | ~1,250 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Malmö | ~1,500 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Gothenburg | ~1,700 km | €400 |
| Tuzla – Larnaca | ~1,750 km | €400 |
| Tuzla – Paris | ~1,400 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Istanbul | ~1,100 km | €250 |
| Tuzla – Zurich | ~1,050 km | €250 |
Most routes from Tuzla fall within the 1,500 km band at €250. The Gothenburg and Larnaca routes qualify for €400.
Wizz Air is Tuzla's dominant carrier, with two A321neo aircraft based at the airport since December 2025/March 2026. It operates routes to 11+ destinations across Europe. Registered in Malta (EU), fully covered by EC 261 in both directions.
The Wizz Air base at Tuzla has a turbulent history: originally opened in 2015, closed in September 2023 (citing winter fog and operational issues), and reopened in December 2025 with subsidies from the Tuzla Canton government. With based aircraft, Wizz Air has more operational flexibility than at non-base airports — but the tight A321neo schedule still means cascading delays are common.

Both Turkish carriers connect Tuzla to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport. As non-European airlines, their flights departing from TZL are covered by EC 261 (European departure point). Return flights from Istanbul are covered by SHY-Passenger.
Chair Airlines (Swiss carrier) is launching a Tuzla–Zurich route from July 2026. As an EU-area registered carrier, it will be covered by EC 261 in both directions.
Fog is the single most significant operational challenge at Tuzla International Airport. The airport sits in a valley prone to winter temperature inversions that trap cold, moist air close to the ground. Persistent fog can shut down the airport for hours or entire days, primarily between November and February.
Wizz Air explicitly cited "persistent winter fog" and "an above-average number of diversions" as reasons for closing its Tuzla base in 2023. The airline has since returned, but the fog problem hasn't changed — it's a geographic reality. The airport implemented a new Low Visibility Take-Off (LVTO) procedure in January 2026 to improve operations during reduced visibility, but landing in fog remains limited by the airport's instrument approach capabilities.
During fog events, flights may be diverted to Sarajevo (120 km), Belgrade, or other airports. If your flight is diverted, the airline must arrange transport to your original destination or to Tuzla. See our diverted flight compensation guide.
With two Wizz Air aircraft based at TZL, each plane operates multiple daily rotations across different routes. A delay on the morning flight to Cologne cascades to the afternoon flight to Berlin and the evening flight to Malmö. This is inherent to the low-cost business model and is NOT an extraordinary circumstance.
The projected doubling of passenger numbers from 338,000 (2025) to 760,000+ (2026) puts significant pressure on terminal facilities, ground handling, and airport operations. Growing pains — longer check-in queues, limited gate space, stretched ground services — may contribute to Tuzla airport delays during peak periods.
Summer thunderstorms and winter snow can also affect operations, though these are less frequent and less impactful than fog.
Tuzla airport flight cancellations can occur for several reasons:
Fog-related cancellations. During prolonged fog events, Wizz Air may cancel flights rather than continue operating with delays and diversions. Fog is an extraordinary circumstance — no compensation is owed, but the airline must provide care, rebooking, and refund options.
Route adjustments. Tuzla has experienced significant route volatility. Wizz Air closed its entire base in 2023, and Lumiwings opened and closed a base within three months in 2023–2024. While Wizz Air's return appears more stable (backed by multi-year subsidies), route changes remain a possibility. If a route is cancelled with less than 14 days' notice, compensation applies.
Seasonal route endings. Some routes operate only seasonally. If the airline ends a route earlier than scheduled with short notice, you may have compensation rights.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the statute of limitations for flight compensation claims is 2 years from the date of the disrupted flight.
If your flight at Tuzla International Airport was delayed or cancelled, FlyPayout handles the entire claim process.
Yes. Bosnia and Herzegovina is an ECAA signatory, so EC 261 applies to every flight departing from Tuzla International Airport, regardless of the airline — including non-European carriers like Pegasus Airlines and AJet.
Most routes from Tuzla are under 1,500 km, so the standard compensation is €250 per person for delays of 3+ hours. The Gothenburg and Larnaca routes qualify for €400 due to greater distance.
The most common Tuzla airport issues are winter fog (the airport's valley location makes it highly prone to persistent fog between November and February), cascading delays from Wizz Air's tight multi-sector schedule, rapid growth straining airport facilities, and route volatility.
Fog is an extraordinary circumstance — no compensation is owed for fog-related Tuzla airport cancellations. However, the airline must still provide care (meals, hotel if needed), rebooking on the next available flight, and a full refund option. If your flight is diverted due to fog, the airline must arrange and pay for transport to your destination.
If fog or other conditions force a diversion to Sarajevo, the airline must arrange transport from Sarajevo to Tuzla or to your final destination at no cost. If the total delay exceeds 3 hours and the cause was not extraordinary circumstances, you may be entitled to compensation. See our diverted flight guide.
Yes, for flights departing from Tuzla. Pegasus Airlines and AJet flights from TZL to Istanbul are covered by EC 261 because Tuzla is a European airport. Compensation of €250 applies for delays of 3+ hours (Istanbul is under 1,500 km from Tuzla).
Tuzla International Airport is in the middle of its biggest expansion ever, but growth brings disruptions. Winter fog, cascading Wizz Air delays, and route changes can leave passengers stranded. Every departure from TZL is covered by EC 261, and compensation of €250 to €400 per person is available for qualifying Tuzla airport flight delays and cancellations.
