Wizz Air is one of Europe's largest ultra-low-cost carriers, operating an extensive network from bases across Central and Eastern Europe, including Belgrade, Tuzla, Skopje, Podgorica, and Pristina. The Wizz Air Group includes three operating subsidiaries: Wizz Air Hungary, Wizz Air Malta (the largest by fleet, with approximately 125 aircraft), and Wizz Air UK. All three are registered in EU or UK jurisdictions, making every Wizz Air flight subject to strong passenger protection laws.
Despite its reach and low fares, Wizz Air has one of the highest disruption rates among European airlines. Pratt & Whitney engine issues have grounded dozens of aircraft, and its tight turnaround model means a single delay cascades across an entire day's schedule. If your Wizz Air flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, this guide explains your rights, how to file a Wizz Air compensation claim, and how FlyPayout handles everything for you.
Wizz Air's business model is built on maximizing aircraft utilization. One plane can fly 5 to 6 sectors per day with minimal turnaround time. When one flight runs late, every subsequent flight on that aircraft is affected. A technical problem at 7 AM in Budapest can delay a passenger flying at 9 PM from Belgrade.
This operational model, combined with ongoing Pratt & Whitney engine problems that have grounded part of the fleet, creates a higher-than-average disruption rate. For passengers, this means a statistically higher chance of qualifying for Wizz Air flight delay compensation on any given flight.
Wizz Air is also known for aggressively offering Wizz Credit (vouchers for future flights) instead of cash compensation. You are never required to accept these. More on this below.
The Wizz Air Group operates under three separate Air Operator Certificates:
| Subsidiary | Registration | IATA | Status under EC 261 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wizz Air Malta | Malta (EU) | W4 | European carrier — covered both directions |
| Wizz Air Hungary | Hungary (EU) | W6 | European carrier — covered both directions |
| Wizz Air UK | United Kingdom | W9 | UK carrier — covered under UK 261 |
All three are European or UK carriers. Every Wizz Air flight is covered by EC 261 or UK 261, regardless of direction. Flights departing from European airports and flights arriving in Europe from outside are all covered.
Check your booking confirmation to see which subsidiary operates your flight. The IATA code (W4, W6, or W9) and the aircraft registration prefix (9H for Malta, HA for Hungary, G for Wizz Air UK) identify which entity is responsible for your claim.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi ceased operations on 1 September 2025 and is no longer relevant. If you had a disrupted Wizz Air Abu Dhabi flight before that date, claims may still be possible within the applicable limitation period.
Standard EC 261 amounts apply:
| Flight distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Note that compensation may be reduced by 50% if you arrive between 3 and 4 hours late on a flight over 3,500 km and the airline rebooked you on an alternative flight arriving within 4 hours of your original scheduled arrival.
Here are examples on common Wizz Air routes from the region:
| Route | Approximate distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Belgrade to Dortmund | ~1,400 km | €250 |
| Belgrade to Memmingen | ~950 km | €250 |
| Belgrade to Barcelona | ~1,850 km | €400 |
| Belgrade to Rome | ~1,050 km | €250 |
| Belgrade to London Luton | ~1,700 km | €400 |
| Belgrade to Larnaca | ~1,800 km | €400 |
| Tuzla to Dortmund | ~1,350 km | €250 |
| Skopje to Basel | ~1,400 km | €250 |
| Podgorica to London | ~1,900 km | €400 |
| Pristina to Memmingen | ~1,250 km | €250 |
| Budapest to London Luton | ~1,450 km | €250 |
These amounts are per passenger. A family of four on a qualifying Belgrade to Barcelona flight can claim €1,600 in total.
If your Wizz Air flight arrives at the final destination 3 or more hours late, you are entitled to Wizz Air flight delay compensation. The delay is measured at arrival, not departure. Even if a flight departs late, if it makes up time in the air and arrives less than 3 hours late, no compensation is owed.

If Wizz Air cancels your flight and notifies you less than 14 days before departure, you are entitled to compensation plus the right to a Wizz Air cancelled flight refund or rebooking on the next available flight, at your choice. Wizz Air is known for cancelling routes on short notice, particularly on lower-demand routes, and passengers who book months in advance sometimes receive cancellation notifications just days before departure.

If Wizz Air involuntarily denies you boarding due to overbooking, compensation must be paid immediately at the airport. The airline must first seek volunteers before involuntarily bumping any passenger.

When Wizz Air cancels a flight or delays it by more than 5 hours, your Wizz Air refund rights under EC 261 entitle you to a full cash refund of the ticket cost within 7 days, rebooking on the next available flight, or rebooking at a later date. This right applies in addition to any compensation you may be eligible for. Wizz Air often steers passengers toward Wizz Credit instead — under EC 261 you are not obligated to accept it. If Wizz Air only offers credit, request cash in writing. If they refuse, FlyPayout can pursue the refund on your behalf.
Wizz Air frequently invokes extraordinary circumstances when rejecting claims, and many of these rejections do not hold up. Technical faults and engine problems are not extraordinary — aircraft maintenance is the airline's responsibility regardless of the cause. Cascading delays from a late-arriving aircraft are an operational scheduling issue within the airline's control. Staff shortages, crew illness, and airport staff strikes by the airline's own employees are also within its sphere of control and are not extraordinary, though air traffic control strikes by external parties are.
What is extraordinary: severe weather, air traffic control strikes by external authorities, security threats, and airport closures ordered by authorities. If Wizz Air rejects your claim citing extraordinary circumstances, FlyPayout independently verifies the defence using flight data.
When disruptions occur, Wizz Air routinely offers Wizz Credit instead of cash compensation. Many passengers accept, thinking it is the only option. Under EC 261, you have the right to payment in cash, by bank transfer, or by cheque. Wizz Credit is only acceptable if you explicitly agree in writing. Before accepting any offer, compare it to what you are legally owed — if your flight entitles you to €400 in cash and Wizz Air offers €100 in credit valid for 12 months, the math does not work in your favour.
Regardless of the cause, Wizz Air must provide care during delays:
| Delay threshold | What you're entitled to |
|---|---|
| 2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls, fax messages or emails |
| 3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls, fax messages or emails |
| 4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls, fax messages or emails |
| Overnight delay | Hotel accommodation plus airport transfers to and from the hotel |
| 5+ hours | Right to abandon the journey plus full refund |
Wizz Air must provide hotel accommodation and airport transfers if an overnight stay is required due to a flight delay — this applies regardless of the cause of the delay. If Wizz Air fails to provide care, cover the additional expenses yourself, keep all receipts, and claim reimbursement alongside your compensation.
To claim compensation for a delayed or cancelled original flight, gather your boarding pass, booking confirmation, and receipts for any additional expenses — meals, accommodation, alternative transportation, and other costs incurred during the disruption. Compensation requests can be submitted through Wizz Air's online claim form. Keep records of all correspondence with the airline including dates and responses.
Since Wizz Air Malta is registered in Malta, Maltese law typically governs the limitation period: 2 years from the date of the disrupted flight. For Wizz Air Hungary flights, Hungarian law also provides 2 years. For Wizz Air UK flights, the limitation period is 6 years in England and Wales, and 5 years in Scotland. Check which subsidiary operated your original flight and file well within the applicable deadline.
Wizz Air is one of the most difficult airlines to claim from. The airline pushes Wizz Credit, invokes extraordinary circumstances aggressively, and often ignores or delays responses to compensation claims. FlyPayout handles the entire process for you.
Claim for Wizz Air disruptions from the last 2 years. We cover all Wizz Air routes across Europe, including flights from Belgrade, Tuzla, Skopje, Podgorica, and Pristina. No win, no fee — you never pay upfront. Expert legal team that challenges Wizz Air's extraordinary circumstances defence and refuses voucher offers on your behalf.
You can file directly through Wizz Air's website or customer service, or let FlyPayout handle the process. Under EC 261, Wizz Air must respond to your claim. If they offer Wizz Credit instead of cash, you can reject it and insist on monetary payment.
If your Wizz Air flight arrives 3 or more hours late, you are entitled to compensation of €250 to €400 depending on distance, plus meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation during the wait. These rights apply because all Wizz Air subsidiaries are registered as European or UK carriers.
Yes. Under EC 261, when a flight is cancelled or delayed by more than 5 hours, you have the right to a full cash refund within 7 days. Wizz Air cannot force you to accept Wizz Credit. If their website only offers credit, contact them directly to request cash, or let FlyPayout handle it.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi ceased operations on 1 September 2025. It was registered in the UAE, not the EU. Flights from Europe to Abu Dhabi operated by Wizz Air Malta (9H registration) were covered by EC 261. If you have an outstanding claim from before September 2025, contact FlyPayout to assess your options.
Wizz Air operates a high-utilization model where one aircraft flies multiple sectors per day. Any delay cascades to all subsequent flights. Combined with ongoing Pratt & Whitney engine issues that have grounded part of the fleet, this creates a higher disruption rate than most European airlines.
For Wizz Air Malta flights (the majority), the limitation period is 2 years under Maltese law. For Wizz Air Hungary, it is 2 years under Hungarian law. For Wizz Air UK, it is 6 years in England and Wales and 5 years in Scotland. Check which subsidiary operated your flight.
Yes. EC 261 refund rights override fare rules. When Wizz Air cancels a flight, you are entitled to a full cash refund regardless of ticket type. This applies even to the cheapest Basic fares.
Wizz Air is one of Europe's most-disrupted airlines and one of the hardest to claim from. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you are entitled to cash compensation — not vouchers. Most passengers accept whatever Wizz Air offers without knowing their rights. Don't be one of them.
