Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland's largest international airport, handling a record 32.6 million passengers in 2025. Located 13 km from central Zurich, it serves as the primary hub for SWISS International Air Lines and Edelweiss Air, with Chair Airlines and Helvetic Airways also based at the airport. With approximately 370 daily departures across three terminals, Zurich Airport is a critical European connection point — particularly for passengers traveling between Western Europe and destinations in the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas.

Despite generally strong operational performance, Zurich Airport has experienced notable disruption events in early 2026 — including a day with 95 delays and 19 cancellations in March, and cascading delays affecting 164 flights across Swiss airports in April.

If your flight at Zurich Airport was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you are protected by EC 261/2004 through Switzerland's bilateral air transport agreement with the EU. Every flight departing from Zurich Airport is covered. And Switzerland's extraordinary 10-year statute of limitations gives you the longest claiming window in Europe.

Coverage, Compensation, and Time Limits

Although Switzerland is not an EU member, EC 261 applies to all flights departing from Zurich Airport through Switzerland's bilateral air transport agreement with the EU. This covers Zurich airport departures on every airline — SWISS, Edelweiss, Chair Airlines, easyJet, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Air India, Austrian Airlines, Oman Air, and all others operating outbound flights from ZRH.

For Swiss and EU carriers, Zurich airport arrivals are also covered on international flights in both directions. For non-EU carriers such as Etihad Airways, Air India, and Oman Air, only the Zurich airport departures are covered — not inbound flights from outside Europe.

Compensation amounts depend on flight distance:

Flight distance

Compensation

Up to 1,500 km

€250

1,500 km to 3,500 km

€400

Over 3,500 km

€600

Zurich Airport's long-haul network to New York, Bangkok, São Paulo, Tokyo, and Singapore means many qualifying flights fall into the €600 band for longer-haul international flights. Domestic flights and short-haul European routes qualify for €250 to €400.

Switzerland's statute of limitations is 10 years — the longest in Europe. Zurich Airport flights from 2016 onwards may still be claimable.

Common Causes of Zurich Airport Delays and Cancellations

SWISS operates tightly timed connection banks through Zurich. When inbound European flights are delayed, the entire hub is disrupted — Zurich airport delays cascade across dozens of outbound flights simultaneously.

Helvetic Airways operates many flights on behalf of SWISS and other carriers under wet-lease arrangements. When Helvetic experiences disruptions, the impact ripples across the SWISS network because Helvetic-operated outbound flights feed into SWISS's connecting schedule.

European airspace congestion. Zurich sits at the crossroads of dense north-south and east-west traffic flows. ATC restrictions in French, Italian, or German airspace directly affect Zurich airport departures. These are generally extraordinary circumstances — no compensation owed, but the right to care applies.

Weather. Winter fog, snow, and ice can affect operations. Summer thunderstorms cause periodic delays. Severe weather that makes safe landing or takeoff impossible is typically an extraordinary circumstance.

Technical faults and crew shortages are NOT extraordinary circumstances — compensation applies when these cause your flight to be delayed or cancelled.

Airlines at Zurich Airport and Your Rights

SWISS is Zurich's dominant airline, registered in Switzerland and covered by EC 261 in both directions through the bilateral agreement. SWISS operates an extensive network including intercontinental routes with scheduled departure times across three waves per day.

Edelweiss Air is SWISS's leisure subsidiary, same rules and same 10-year limitation period.

Chair Airlines is a boutique holiday airline based at Zurich, registered in Switzerland, with key routes to Pristina, Ohrid, Antalya, and Red Sea destinations.

Helvetic Airways is a regional carrier operating on behalf of SWISS, registered in Switzerland with full EC 261 coverage.

EU-registered carriers with Zurich services — easyJet, Wizz Air, Eurowings, Vueling, Austrian Airlines, ITA Airways, and LATAM Airlines on European legs — are all covered in both directions. For connecting flights, compensation is based on total journey distance and your delay at the final destination, regardless of which carrier operates each segment.

Non-EU carriers including Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Air India, Oman Air, and TAP Air Portugal (for non-EU departures) are covered only for their departures from Zurich Airport.

Connecting Flights Through Zurich

Zurich Airport is one of the most important connection hubs for the Western Balkans diaspora in Switzerland. Pristina alone has 57 weekly departures to Zurich — 20% of all PRN traffic. Routes to Skopje, Tirana, Sarajevo, and Podgorica are served by SWISS, Chair Airlines, and other carriers.

If you missed a connecting flight at Zurich due to a delay on an inbound leg, and all flights were on a single booking, compensation is based on the total journey distance and your delay at the final destination. A short delay on a domestic or regional inbound flight can trigger €600 compensation if it causes a significant delay on a long-haul onward departure.

For self-transfer passengers — where you booked flights separately, clear customs and passport control between connections, change terminals, and handle your own bag drop for the onward flight — each flight is treated as an independent journey. Layover time between separately booked flights does not create a single-booking claim.

Zurich Airport Practical Information

If the airline does not proactively provide care, approach the airline's desk or check-in counter, document what you were refused, cover the costs yourself, keep all receipts, and claim reimbursement. If you cannot locate the airline directly at the airport, contact the airline directly using the telephone number on your booking confirmation.

Your Rights During Disruptions

Regardless of cause, airlines must provide care during any delay. The right to care applies from the scheduled departure time of the delayed flight.
