Flew with Etihad and your flight was delayed or cancelled? Flight disruptions on flights departing from Europe can entitle you to Etihad compensation of up to €600 per person. Check now: it's free and takes under 2 minutes.

Etihad Airways is the flag carrier of Abu Dhabi, founded in 2003 and operating around 110 aircraft to some 90 destinations from Zayed International Airport. Owned by the state holding company ADQ, it is targeting more than 170 aircraft and 38 million passengers by 2030. Etihad belongs to no alliance, expanding instead through codeshare partnerships. The group also includes Etihad Cargo and Etihad Holidays, and a flight booked through Etihad Holidays carries the same passenger rights as any other Etihad Airways flight.

Etihad is registered in the United Arab Emirates, which makes it a non-European carrier under EC 261/2004. Your rights depend on where the flight departed from rather than on the airline's nationality: every Etihad flight leaving a European Union airport is fully covered, while flights arriving in Europe from Abu Dhabi are not.

There is an important exception specific to this airline. Several of Etihad's codeshare partners are European carriers, so some tickets sold under an EY code are claimable in both directions.

This guide explains which flights qualify, how much Etihad flight compensation you can claim, how an Etihad refund works under EC 261, what documents you need, and how FlyPayout handles your claim.

Why Etihad's registration matters for your rights

Etihad is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and holds a UAE air operator's certificate. It is not a European carrier, so EC 261 applies on departure point alone.

Departures from Europe are fully covered. A flight from London, Manchester, Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Zurich, Vienna, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam, Athens, Larnaca, Malta, Kraków or Palma de Mallorca to Abu Dhabi falls under EC 261 in full. Passengers departing from any EU airport, plus the UK, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, have the same EU flight compensation rights.

Arrivals into Europe from Abu Dhabi are not covered. An Abu Dhabi to Frankfurt or Abu Dhabi to London flight sits outside the regulation, because neither the departure point nor the carrier is European.

When an Etihad ticket is claimable in both directions

Etihad's partnership strategy creates an opening that most Gulf carriers do not offer.

Etihad codeshares with Air Serbia, giving its customers access to twelve Southeast European destinations through the Belgrade hub, fed from Etihad's own gateways in Athens, Milan, Rome and Vienna. In June 2026 it added a codeshare with TAROM, Romania's flag carrier, supporting a new Abu Dhabi to Bucharest route with onward access to six Romanian cities plus Belgrade, Budapest, Chișinău and Sofia. It also partners with Air France-KLM.

Air Serbia is registered in Serbia, an ECAA country where EC 261 has been adopted into national law. TAROM is Romanian, and Air France and KLM are French and Dutch. All are European carriers.

That matters because EC 261 attaches to the operating carrier, not to the code on your ticket. On flights operated by one of them under an EY code, you were on a European carrier, and the inbound leg into Europe is covered as fully as the outbound.

Compare this with Etihad's Gulf neighbours, whose principal codeshare partners are registered outside Europe. On those networks the return flight carries no entitlement at all. On Etihad it sometimes does, and the flight number on your boarding pass tells you which carrier operated the flight.

How much Etihad compensation can you claim?

Under EC 261, compensation amounts are fixed by distance:

Flight distance

Compensation

Up to 1,500 km

€250

1,500 km to 3,500 km

€400

Over 3,500 km

€600

Almost every Etihad route from Europe crosses 3,500 km. Only the eastern Mediterranean falls below it, and no Etihad route from Europe is short enough for the €250 band, which applies to flights up to 1,500 km.

Route (departing Europe)

Approximate distance

Compensation

Larnaca to Abu Dhabi

~2,335 km

€400

Athens to Abu Dhabi

~3,260 km

€400

Malta to Abu Dhabi

~4,035 km

€600

Vienna to Abu Dhabi

~4,240 km

€600

Rome to Abu Dhabi

~4,340 km

€600

Frankfurt to Abu Dhabi

~4,860 km

€600

London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi

~5,515 km

€600

Manchester to Abu Dhabi

~5,680 km

€600

Dublin to Abu Dhabi

~5,940 km

€600

These amounts are per passenger. A family of four on a disrupted London to Abu Dhabi flight can claim €2,400 in total, and the figure has nothing to do with the ticket cost. More tickets on one booking mean a larger claim, not more paperwork.

When do you qualify for Etihad delay compensation?

Flight delays

If your Etihad flight departed a European airport and arrived at its final destination 3 or more hours late, you qualify for Etihad flight delay compensation. The arrival delay is what counts, not the departure delay, so a flight that pushes back late but recovers time in the air may not qualify. It must also not have been caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control.

Check your flight status for the actual arrival time: a delayed flight reaching Abu Dhabi more than three hours late is the typical case. Long delays on the first leg of a connecting itinerary are assessed at the final destination, as explained below.

Full details: Flight Delay Compensation

Cancelled flights

If Etihad cancelled your Europe-departing flight and notified you less than 14 days before departure, you are entitled to Etihad flight cancellation compensation at the same amounts, plus a choice between a full refund and rebooking on an alternative flight. Notice of 14 days or more removes the entitlement but not the refund or rebooking right.

Seasonal routes deserve particular attention. Kraków and Palma de Mallorca operate only in summer, and a cancellation on a thin seasonal service can mean days rather than hours before the next flight.

Denied boarding

If Etihad involuntarily denies you boarding on a Europe-departing flight because it is oversold, denied boarding compensation is payable immediately at the airport, by bank transfer, cash or cheque, and in vouchers only if you agree. The airline must seek volunteers first.

Missed connections through Abu Dhabi

Etihad positions Zayed International Airport as a connecting hub between Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa, and most European passengers transit there.

If a delay leaving Europe caused you to miss that connecting flight and the journey was on a single booking, compensation is calculated on the total journey distance and your arrival delay at the final destination. A Milan to Abu Dhabi to Sydney itinerary disrupted on the first leg is assessed on Milan to Sydney.

The same principle applies on the European codeshares: a journey ticketed through Abu Dhabi and Belgrade is one itinerary, assessed on where you finally arrived.

Etihad refund policy under EC 261

When your Europe-departing Etihad flight is cancelled, or delayed by 5 or more hours, EC 261 requires a full refund within 7 days, covering taxes and fees on any unused portion, plus a return flight to your departure point if you have already flown part of the trip. The alternative is rebooking on the next available flight or on a new flight at a later date.

An Etihad refund on these grounds overrides the fare conditions entirely. An Economy Value or similar restricted fare is fully refundable when the airline is the party cancelling. Etihad must also give you the rebooking or rerouting information in writing, so keep any written confirmation of the alternative flight offered.

What Etihad must provide during disruptions

Whether or not compensation is owed, Etihad must provide care when a Europe-departing flight is delayed:

Delay threshold

What you're entitled to

2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km)

Meals, refreshments, 2 free phone calls or emails

3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km)

Meals, refreshments, 2 free phone calls or emails

4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km)

Meals, refreshments, 2 free phone calls or emails

Overnight delay

Free hotel accommodation plus transport to and from the hotel

5+ hours

Right to abandon the journey plus full refund

On Etihad's long European routes, the duty to provide food starts after 4 hours, and after 3 hours from Larnaca and Athens. Free food must be in proportion to the waiting time, and an overnight delay means free accommodation, not a voucher towards a hotel stay you arrange yourself.

Care is owed regardless of the cause, including where the disruption was an extraordinary circumstance. If nothing is offered, cover the costs yourself, keep receipts and claim reimbursement of the extra cost.

Etihad and extraordinary circumstances

Etihad is not required to pay compensation when a disruption is caused by events genuinely outside its control: severe weather, air traffic control restrictions or strikes, security threats, political instability affecting airspace, and airspace or airport closures ordered by authorities.

These do not qualify: technical faults, maintenance issues, crew shortages or illness, and strikes by the airline's own staff. A delay or cancellation for any of these reasons is the airline's fault in the sense the regulation uses, and compensation remains due.

Growth is not an extraordinary circumstance

Etihad is expanding faster than any of its Gulf competitors: fourteen new international routes, more than ninety destinations, and roughly a doubling of the fleet by 2030 while its rivals consolidate.

Expansion at that pace has consequences. Crew recruitment and training lag aircraft deliveries, handovers slip, and thinly resourced new routes are the first to be cut when something goes wrong elsewhere. All of these are operational matters within the airline's control.

An airline that chooses rapid growth accepts the risk that comes with it. A delay caused by crew shortages on a new route, or by an aircraft not delivered on schedule, is not an unforeseeable external event, whatever a rejection letter says.

If Etihad rejects your claim citing extraordinary circumstances, FlyPayout verifies the defence against the actual flight data.

Downgrading on Etihad

If Etihad places you in a lower class than the one you booked, EC 261 requires reimbursement of 75% of the ticket price on any flight over 3,500 km, which covers every European route.

This is separate from delay compensation and is owed regardless of why the cabin changed. It matters here because Etihad operates several premium products, including The Residence on its reactivated A380s, and substitutes aircraft types across its European network. On a premium fare the reimbursement can be worth several times the €600.

Etihad baggage compensation

Baggage sits under the Montreal Convention, to which the UAE and every EU member state are parties. If Etihad loses, delays or damages your checked luggage, you can claim up to 1,519 SDR, roughly €1,800 per passenger, a single cap covering destroyed, lost, damaged and delayed baggage.

Unlike EC 261, the Montreal Convention applies in both directions, so your baggage rights survive on the return from Abu Dhabi even where your delay compensation rights do not. It is a limit, not a fixed sum, so keep receipts for anything you replaced.

Deadlines: report damage in writing within 7 days of receiving the bag, and delay within 21 days of delivery. Baggage still missing after 21 days is treated as lost.

See our guides to lost luggage, delayed luggage, and damaged luggage.

Time limits for filing an Etihad compensation claim

Because only Europe-departing flights fall under EC 261, the limitation period is set by the European country you left rather than by the UAE.

This varies widely. The United Kingdom allows 6 years, Spain and France 5, Germany and Austria 3, the Netherlands and Italy 2, so in most EU countries you have 2 to 3 years to file a claim. Where a European codeshare partner operated your flight, a claim can generally also be brought where that carrier is based.

If your flight left a European airport within the last few years, check rather than assume it has closed.

What you need to claim Etihad compensation

Whether you claim through FlyPayout or on your own, the compensation claim rests on a few items:

•      Your boarding pass or booking confirmation, showing the flight number and the date.

•      The personal details of each passenger claiming, since compensation is paid per person.

•      Your flight details: the scheduled and actual arrival times at the final destination.

•      Any written confirmation from Etihad about the delay or cancellation, its stated reason and any rebooking offered.

•      Receipts for meals, a hotel stay or transport you paid for yourself.

You can claim through the Etihad Airways website or contact Etihad Airways customer service, but expect a lengthy process: claims may be ignored, delayed or rejected with broad references to operational circumstances. If the airline refuses, the next step on your own is a complaint to the competent national enforcement body in the country of departure, which can take months and cannot force payment in every case.

Frequently Asked Questions About Etihad Compensation

How much Etihad flight delay compensation am I entitled to?

€600 per passenger on almost every route, since nearly all Etihad services from Europe exceed 3,500 km. The exceptions are Larnaca and Athens, which fall in the €400 band. Your fare and cabin make no difference to the figure.

My Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi to Europe was delayed. Can I claim?

Usually not under EC 261, since Etihad is a non-European carrier and the flight did not depart Europe. But check the operating carrier. If Air Serbia, TAROM, Air France or KLM flew it under an Etihad code, you were on a European carrier and the inbound leg is covered in full.

My ticket said Etihad but the aircraft was Air Serbia. Who do I claim from?

Air Serbia, as the operating carrier, and this works in your favour. Air Serbia is registered in Serbia, an ECAA country where EC 261 applies, which brings a Belgrade to Abu Dhabi leg into scope in a way an Etihad-operated flight would not be. See our Air Serbia compensation guide.

Etihad said the delay was caused by crew availability. Does that count?

Crew shortages are within the airline's control and do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances. This comes up often on rapidly expanding networks, where hiring runs behind aircraft deliveries. The compensation obligation stands.

I was downgraded from Business to Economy. What can I claim?

Reimbursement of 75% of the ticket price for that flight, under Article 10 of EC 261, since every European route exceeds 3,500 km. This is separate from delay compensation and is owed regardless of why the cabin changed.

My seasonal Kraków flight was cancelled. Does that affect the claim?

Not the entitlement, but usually the amount of delay. Seasonal routes operate at low frequency, so a cancellation can leave days rather than hours before the next departure. Compensation is assessed on how late you finally arrived.

Is an Etihad refund the same as compensation?

No. A refund returns money you paid for a ticket you did not use. Compensation is a separate payment for the disruption itself. If Etihad cancelled your Europe-departing flight, you may be entitled to both, and accepting a refund does not waive the EU flight cancellation compensation claim.

Does delayed baggage count as a flight disruption?

No. Delayed baggage is claimed under the Montreal Convention, separately from EU flight compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight, and in both directions. Report the delay in writing within 21 days.

Your Etihad flight was disrupted. Get what you're owed.

Almost every Etihad route out of Europe sits in the €600 band, and if a European partner operated your flight, the journey home may be claimable too. If your flight is delayed three hours or more, your flight is cancelled at short notice, or you were denied boarding, that money is owed to you. On this network, the assumption that a Gulf carrier owes you nothing is wrong more often than usual.

Seeking compensation on your own is possible but slow. Check your Etihad flight now and let FlyPayout claim your rightful compensation: it takes under 2 minutes and is completely free.

FlyPayout helps passengers claim compensation for flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding, overbooking, missed connections, and baggage claims. Our service is risk-free: you only pay when we succeed.
