Vueling is Spain's largest airline by number of flights, operating from its main hub at Barcelona–El Prat Airport with secondary bases at Rome Fiumicino, Paris Orly, Amsterdam Schiphol, and London Gatwick. This Spanish low-cost airline and EU airline is part of International Airlines Group (IAG) alongside British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, and operates approximately 141 Airbus A320 family aircraft serving around 99 destinations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
If your Vueling flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you have strong legal protections. Vueling Airlines is registered in Spain (EU), making it a European carrier under EC 261/2004 — Regulation EC 261. This means Vueling compensation applies in both directions. Spain's 5-year statute of limitations means you can claim for disruptions going back to mid-2021.
As a European carrier, all Vueling flights are covered by EC 261 regardless of direction. Every Vueling flight falls under Regulation EC 261 — including non-EU departures returning to Europe.
Under Spanish law, you have 5 years from the flight date to file a claim. This is among the most generous limitation periods in Europe, meaning flights from mid-2021 onwards are still claimable.
As part of IAG, Vueling has codeshare arrangements with British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus, providing more rebooking options during disruptions but also creating complexity around which carrier is responsible for compensation.
Standard EC 261 amounts apply, with compensation of up to €600 depending on the distance of the flight and the arrival delay:
| Flight distance | Vueling compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
For long-haul flights over 3,500 km, if the final arrival delay is between 3 and 4 hours, the compensation may be reduced by 50%.
Here are examples on common Vueling routes:
| Route | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Barcelona to Madrid | ~480 km | €250 |
| Barcelona to Paris Orly | ~830 km | €250 |
| Barcelona to Rome Fiumicino | ~850 km | €250 |
| Barcelona to London Gatwick | ~1,140 km | €250 |
| Barcelona to Amsterdam | ~1,240 km | €250 |
| Paris Orly to Marrakech | ~1,900 km | €400 |
| Barcelona to Tenerife | ~2,350 km | €400 |
| Barcelona to Gran Canaria | ~2,700 km | €400 |
| Rome to Tel Aviv | ~2,250 km | €400 |
Vueling operates predominantly short-haul European routes, so most claims fall within the €250 band. Routes to the Canary Islands, North Africa, and the Middle East reach the €400 band.
If your Vueling flight arrives at the final destination 3 or more hours late, you are entitled to Vueling flight delay compensation, measured at arrival time. Vueling airlines operates a high-frequency network from Barcelona with tight turnarounds — a delay on one flight cascades through the day.

Vueling can take 6 to 10 weeks to respond. Retain booking references, boarding passes, and receipts for meals and accommodation if the airline fails to provide vouchers.
Vueling invokes extraordinary circumstances to reject claims. ATC restrictions can be extraordinary, but technical faults and crew issues are not. FlyPayout independently verifies every rejection.
Vueling may offer vouchers instead of cash. Under EC 261, you have the right to insist on cash. There are no upfront fees with FlyPayout — you only pay when you receive your money.
If you booked through a British Airways or Iberia but Vueling operated the flight, your claim goes to Vueling. Check your boarding pass and flight number for "Operated by."
When Vueling cancels a flight or delays it by 5 or more hours, your EC 261 rights require the airline to offer a full cash refund of the ticket within 7 days, rebooking on the next available flight or on an IAG partner, or rebooking at a later date. Vueling refunds must be in the original form of payment — not credit.
Airlines must provide free airport care if a delay exceeds 2 hours, regardless of the cause. This includes meal and drink vouchers, fax messages or free communications, and hotel accommodation for an overnight stay if necessary.
| Delay threshold | What you're entitled to |
|---|---|
| 2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls, fax messages or emails |
| 3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| 4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| Overnight delay | Hotel accommodation plus transport to and from the hotel |
| 5+ hours | Right to abandon the journey plus full refund |
If your baggage is lost, delayed, or damaged on a Vueling flight, file a Property Irregularity Report at the airport immediately. Lost luggage is considered officially lost after 21 days. Keep receipts for essential purchases made while waiting for delayed baggage and submit a claim within 21 days of the bag's return.
Technical faults, crew shortages, Vueling staff strikes, and cascading delays are all within the airline's control and not extraordinary.
Severe weather, ATC restrictions or controller strikes, security concerns, armed conflict, and bird strikes are all confirmed extraordinary circumstances. Vueling must still provide care and rebooking even when extraordinary circumstances apply.
