Lufthansa is Germany's flag carrier and the heart of the Lufthansa Group, operating from hubs at Frankfurt and Munich to over 200 destinations worldwide. The broader group includes Austrian Airlines, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, ITA Airways, and Discover Airlines.
If your Lufthansa flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you have strong passenger rights. Lufthansa is registered in Germany (EU), making it a European carrier under EC 261/2004. This means Lufthansa compensation applies in both directions — flights departing from any airport worldwide and flights arriving in Europe. Lufthansa passenger rights are backed by German courts that are notably passenger-friendly.
This guide explains how to file a Lufthansa claim, the Lufthansa refund process, how much Lufthansa compensation you can receive, and how FlyPayout handles the case for you.
Lufthansa is registered in Germany, an EU member state. As a European carrier, every Lufthansa flight is covered by EC 261 in both directions. A Lufthansa flight from New York to Frankfurt is covered. A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Tokyo is covered. Every route, regardless of origin or destination, falls under EC 261.
Germany also offers one of the more generous limitation periods in Europe. Claims expire at the end of the third calendar year after the disruption — a flight disrupted any time in 2024 can be claimed until 31 December 2027.
Standard EC 261 amounts apply:
| Flight distance | Lufthansa compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Lufthansa operates an extensive long-haul network, meaning many qualifying flights fall into the highest €600 band. Here are examples:
| Route | Approximate distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt to London | ~650 km | €250 |
| Frankfurt to Paris | ~480 km | €250 |
| Munich to Barcelona | ~1,100 km | €250 |
| Frankfurt to Istanbul | ~1,860 km | €400 |
| Frankfurt to New York | ~6,200 km | €600 |
| Munich to Bangkok | ~8,950 km | €600 |
| Frankfurt to Tokyo | ~9,350 km | €600 |
| Frankfurt to Los Angeles | ~9,300 km | €600 |
These amounts are per passenger. A family of four on a qualifying Frankfurt to New York flight can claim €2,400 in total.
If your Lufthansa flight arrives at the final destination more than three hours late, you are entitled to Lufthansa flight delay compensation. The delay is measured at arrival, not departure.
Lufthansa operates a complex hub-and-spoke system through Frankfurt and Munich with tight connections. When a Lufthansa flight arrives late, it frequently causes passengers to miss onward connections. If all flights are on a single booking, your compensation is based on the delay at your final destination.

If Lufthansa cancels your flight and notifies you less than 14 days before departure, you are entitled to compensation and the right to a Lufthansa cancelled flight refund or rebooking on an alternative flight. Passengers on discontinued routes due to Lufthansa's ongoing cost-reduction program are entitled to full refunds and, if notified within 14 days, compensation.

If Lufthansa involuntarily denies you boarding due to overbooking, compensation must be paid immediately at the airport. The airline must first seek volunteers before involuntarily bumping any passenger.

Lufthansa's hub operations make missed connections a common issue. If a delay on your first Lufthansa leg causes you to miss a connecting flight, and the entire journey was booked under one reservation, your compensation is based on the total journey distance and the delay at your final destination.

When Lufthansa cancels a flight or delays it by 5 or more hours, EC 261 requires the airline to offer a full refund of the ticket within seven days including all taxes and fees, rebooking on the next available replacement flight (which can include Star Alliance partners or other airlines), or rebooking at a later date of your choosing.
Lufthansa is a member of Star Alliance, giving it access to partners including United, Turkish Airlines, and ANA for rebooking. The Lufthansa refund or rebooking must be offered regardless of fare type. The airline cannot force you to accept a voucher instead of cash.
Before submitting a claim, collect your flight details and keep receipts for any out-of-pocket expenses — meals, transport, accommodation — as these can be claimed in addition to the fixed EC 261 amount.
The operating carrier is always responsible for EC 261 claims — not the booking carrier. If you booked through Lufthansa's website but your flight was operated by Austrian Airlines (common on Vienna connections), your claim goes to Austrian Airlines. If Brussels Airlines operated the leg, the claim goes to Brussels Airlines. Check your boarding pass or booking confirmation for the operating airline's flight number before filing.
This matters most for passengers connecting through Vienna. A booking showing "Lufthansa" from Belgrade to New York via Vienna may have the Belgrade to Vienna segment operated by Austrian Airlines — making that airline, not Lufthansa, responsible for any disruption on that leg.
Regardless of the cause, Lufthansa must provide care during delays:
| Delay threshold | What you're entitled to |
|---|---|
| 2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| 3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| 4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| Overnight delay (following day) | Hotel accommodation plus transport to and from the hotel |
| 5+ hours | Right to abandon the journey plus full refund |
If a Lufthansa flight is delayed until the following day, the airline must arrange hotel accommodation and transport to and from the hotel for affected passengers. If Lufthansa fails to provide care, cover costs yourself, retain all receipts, and claim reimbursement.
Lufthansa is not required to pay compensation when disruptions are caused by genuine extraordinary circumstances: severe weather, air traffic control strikes or restrictions, security threats, and airport closures.
The following are not extraordinary circumstances: technical faults (aircraft maintenance is the airline's responsibility regardless of fleet age), crew shortages (staffing is within the airline's control), and Lufthansa staff strikes (courts have ruled these are not extraordinary circumstances — Lufthansa has experienced multiple pilot and cabin crew strikes in recent years).
If Lufthansa rejects your claim citing extraordinary circumstances, FlyPayout independently verifies whether the defence is valid using flight data.
| Flight date | Claim deadline |
|---|---|
| Any date in 2024 | 31 December 2027 |
| Any date in 2025 | 31 December 2028 |
| Any date in 2026 | 31 December 2029 |
Germany's 3-year limitation period is one of the most generous in Europe. Don't wait until the deadline — file as early as possible for the strongest case.
Lufthansa has a dedicated claims department, but claims are frequently delayed, rejected, or offered as vouchers instead of cash. Compensation claims are typically processed within 14 to 30 days; complex claims can take 6 to 12 weeks. FlyPayout handles the entire process and escalates to legal proceedings if necessary.
Claim for Lufthansa disruptions from the last 3 years — Germany's generous limitation period means older claims are still viable. We cover all Lufthansa routes worldwide, plus Lufthansa Group airline claims. No win, no fee — you never pay upfront. Expert legal team experienced in German aviation law and EC 261 claims.
You can file directly through Lufthansa's customer relations online form, or let FlyPayout handle the process. Under EC 261, Lufthansa must respond to compensation claims. If they reject it, you can escalate to Germany's National Enforcement Body (the Federal Aviation Office, Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) or pursue legal action.
If your Lufthansa flight arrives more than three hours late at the final destination, you are entitled to Lufthansa flight delay compensation of €250 to €600 depending on distance, plus meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation during the wait. These rights apply to all routes because Lufthansa is a European carrier.
Lufthansa compensation for a cancelled flight is €250 to €600 depending on flight distance, provided you were notified less than 14 days before departure. You also have the right to a full Lufthansa cancelled flight refund or rebooking, regardless of when you were notified.
If Austrian Airlines operated the flight, your claim goes to Austrian Airlines — even if you booked through Lufthansa's website. The operating carrier is always responsible under EC 261. Check your boarding pass for the operating airline before filing.
Under EC 261, Lufthansa must offer a choice between a full cash refund within seven days and rebooking when a flight is cancelled. This applies regardless of fare type. Even basic economy fares qualify for a refund when Lufthansa cancels the flight.
Under German law, you have until the end of the third calendar year after the disrupted flight. A flight disrupted in 2024 can be claimed until 31 December 2027 — significantly more time than most other European jurisdictions.
Lufthansa is subject to the same EC 261 obligations as every other European carrier. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to up to €600 per person. Germany's 3-year limitation period means even older disruptions are still claimable.
