Ryanair is Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, carrying 206.5 million passengers in 2025 across a network of 234 destinations in over 40 countries. The Ryanair Group operates a fleet of 646 Boeing 737 aircraft through five subsidiaries: Ryanair DAC (Ireland), Malta Air (Malta), Buzz (Poland), Lauda Europe (Austria), and Ryanair UK (United Kingdom). With an average of 3,184 daily flights, Ryanair is also Europe's largest airline by flights operated.
If your Ryanair flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you have strong legal protections. Ryanair DAC is registered in Ireland (EU), making it a European carrier under EC 261/2004. This means Ryanair compensation applies in both directions — flights departing from any airport worldwide and flights arriving in Europe. Ireland's 6-year statute of limitations — the most generous in Europe — means you can claim for flights going back to 2020.
This guide explains how to claim Ryanair compensation, Ryanair's approach to valid claims, the Ryanair refund process, and how FlyPayout handles the case for you.
Ryanair DAC is registered in Ireland, an EU member state. As a European carrier, all Ryanair flights are covered by EC 261 regardless of direction. A Ryanair flight from Marrakech to Dublin is covered. A Ryanair flight from Dublin to Lanzarote is covered. Every Ryanair flight, anywhere in the world, falls under EC 261.
Ireland offers the longest limitation period in Europe. Under Irish law, you have 6 years from the flight date to file a claim Ryanair compensation. This means flights from 2020 onwards are still claimable. The Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) in Dublin handles escalated Ryanair complaints and rules in the passenger's favor in approximately 70% of cases.
Note on subsidiaries: Ryanair DAC (FR prefix), Malta Air, Buzz (SP- registration), Lauda Europe, and Ryanair UK (English United Kingdom registration, G- prefix) are all separate legal entities. All are European or UK carriers, meaning EC 261 or UK 261 applies to all of them.
Standard EC 261 amounts apply. Compensation amounts for Ryanair flights are fixed under EU Regulation EC 261, ranging from €250 to €600 depending on flight distance:
| Flight distance | Ryanair compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Here are examples on common Ryanair routes:
| Route | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Dublin to London Stansted | ~470 km | €250 |
| London Stansted to Barcelona | ~1,140 km | €250 |
| Dublin to Alicante | ~1,700 km | €400 |
| Milan Bergamo to Palma de Mallorca | ~1,000 km | €250 |
| Berlin to Faro | ~2,700 km | €400 |
| Rome Ciampino to Athens | ~1,050 km | €250 |
| Krakow to London Stansted | ~1,530 km | €400 |
| Dublin to Tenerife | ~2,900 km | €400 |
| Vienna to Banja Luka | ~550 km | €250 |
| Belgrade to Memmingen | ~950 km | €250 |
These amounts are per passenger. A family of four on a qualifying Dublin to Tenerife flight can claim €1,600 in total.
If your Ryanair flight is delayed and arrives at the final destination 3 or more hours late — three hours being the threshold under EC 261 — you are entitled to Ryanair flight delay compensation. The delay is measured at arrival when doors open, not at departure. Ryanair operates one of the tightest turnaround models in aviation — typically 25 minutes at the gate — meaning a technical issue on a morning short flight from Stansted can delay every subsequent flight on that aircraft's rotation across Europe.

If Ryanair cancels your flight and notifies you less than 14 days before departure, you are entitled to compensation for a cancelled Ryanair flight. You also have the right to a Ryanair refund or rebooking. If a schedule change significantly alters your departure time — moved forward by more than 1 hour, or delayed by more than 3 hours — it is treated as a cancellation under EC 261.

If Ryanair involuntarily denies you boarding due to overbooking, compensation must be paid immediately at the airport. The airline must first seek volunteers. Gather your boarding pass and booking confirmation at the gate — you will need these documents to claim Ryanair compensation.

Ryanair has a well-documented pattern of making the claims process difficult. When you contact Ryanair customer service to submit a claim, common tactics include sending template rejection emails citing extraordinary circumstances without specific evidence, offering Ryanair credit or vouchers instead of cash, citing bad weather or severe weather conditions broadly when the actual cause was a technical fault, and making the online claims form hard to find. Many passengers accept the first rejection from a Ryanair rejected claim response and walk away — which is exactly what the airline counts on.
You are never required to accept vouchers. Valid claims entitle you to cash, not credit. If Ryanair refuses or fails to respond within 6 to 8 weeks, you can escalate to the Irish Commission for Aviation Regulation or the national enforcement body where your flight departed.
When Ryanair cancels a flight or delays it by 5 or more hours, the Ryanair refund rights under EC 261 require the airline to offer a full cash refund of the ticket cost within 7 days including all taxes, fees, and ancillary charges such as baggage fees and seat selection. Alternatively, you can choose rebooking on the next available flight or rebooking at a later date. Ryanair must process refunds in the original form of payment and cannot force Ryanair credit instead of cash.
To claim expenses incurred due to the disruption — meals, hotel, or transport costs — submit a separate expense claim with itemized receipts through Ryanair's portal or directly by email. Keep all receipts from the original flight date onwards.
Regardless of the cause, Ryanair must provide care when a Ryanair flight is delayed. Passengers are entitled to Duty of Care from the airline during disruptions: meals and refreshments after two hours on short flights, and after two to three hours on longer flights, plus two telephone calls or emails. For overnight delays, hotel accommodation and transport to and from the hotel are required.
| Delay threshold | What you're entitled to |
|---|---|
| 2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km) | Receive meals, refreshments, two telephone calls or emails |
| 3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, two telephone calls or emails |
| 4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, telephone calls or emails |
| Overnight delay | Hotel accommodation plus transport to and from the hotel |
| 5+ hours | Right to abandon the journey plus full refund |
If Ryanair does not provide care — which is common at smaller airports — cover costs yourself, keep all receipts, and submit an itemized expense claim for reimbursement. These additional costs can be recovered on top of the standard compensation amounts.
Extraordinary circumstances do not include technical aircraft issues or airline staff shortages — these generally qualify for compensation because they are within the airline's control. Ryanair frequently cites extraordinary circumstances to deny valid claims, but courts have consistently ruled against improper use of this defense.
What is NOT extraordinary (Ryanair must pay): technical faults and maintenance issues, crew shortages or illness, Ryanair staff strikes, cascading delays from tight scheduling, and IT system failures. What IS extraordinary (Ryanair does not have to pay compensation but must still provide care): severe weather conditions at your specific airport, air traffic control restrictions, air traffic control strikes by external parties, airport staff strikes by third-party workers, security risks, medical emergencies on board, and political instability.

Since Ryanair operates across Europe, the applicable limitation period depends on where you file:
| Jurisdiction | Time limit |
|---|---|
| Ireland (Ryanair's home country) | 6 years |
| England and Wales | 6 years |
| Scotland | 5 years |
| France | 5 years |
| Spain | 5 years |
| Germany | 3 years (expires end of 3rd calendar year) |
| Italy | 2 years |
| Netherlands | 2 years |
| Belgium | 1 year |
Filing in Ireland or England gives you the longest window. FlyPayout assesses which jurisdiction gives you the strongest claim.
Ryanair is one of the most difficult airlines to claim from. They reject valid claims aggressively, delay responses, push vouchers over cash, and cite extraordinary circumstances improperly. FlyPayout is not a claims chaser — we are a legal team that handles the entire Ryanair claim compensation process with no upfront costs or upfront fees.
You can contact Ryanair customer service directly through their website (look for EU261 compensation in the customer service section), or let FlyPayout handle the process. Under EC 261, Ryanair must respond to your claim. If they reject it or do not respond within 6 to 8 weeks, you can escalate to the Irish Commission for Aviation Regulation or the national enforcement body where your original flight departed.
Ryanair delay compensation for a flight arriving 3 or more hours late ranges from €250 to €600 depending on distance. Most Ryanair routes are short-haul under 1,500 km, qualifying for €250 per person. Mid-range routes qualify for €400.
Yes. Under EC 261, when Ryanair cancels your flight you have the right to a full cash Ryanair refund within 7 days. Ryanair cannot force you to accept credit or vouchers. If the website only offers credit, contact Ryanair customer service directly and insist on a cash refund, or let FlyPayout handle the ticket refund on your behalf.
Yes. Because Ryanair is a European airline registered in Ireland, EU261 Ryanair rules apply to all its flights regardless of where they depart — including flights from Morocco, Turkey, and other non-EU countries.
It depends on where you file. In Ireland and England and Wales, you have 6 years from the flight date. In Germany, 3 years. In the Netherlands and Italy, 2 years. In Belgium, 1 year. FlyPayout files in the jurisdiction that gives you the best outcome.
Yes. Ryanair UK is registered in the United Kingdom and is covered by UK 261. Compensation amounts are £220, £350, or £520. The limitation period is 6 years in England and Wales, 5 years in Scotland.
Ryanair is Europe's largest airline — and one of the hardest to claim from. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you are entitled to up to €600 per person in cash. Not vouchers. Not credit. Cash. Most passengers give up after Ryanair's first rejection. Don't be one of them.
