Air France is the flag carrier of France and one of Europe's largest full-service airlines. Headquartered in Paris, the airline operates from its primary hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and its secondary hub at Paris Orly, serving destinations across six continents. With a fleet of 229 aircraft, Air France is part of the Air France-KLM Group and a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance alongside Delta Air Lines, KLM, and Korean Air.
If your Air France flight was delayed, cancelled, or you were denied boarding, you have strong legal protections. Air France is a European carrier registered in France (EU) under EU Regulation EC 261/2004 — also known as Regulation 261 2004. This means Air France compensation applies in both directions — flights departing from any airport worldwide and flights arriving in Europe. France's 5-year statute of limitations means you can claim for disruptions going back to mid-2021.
This guide explains how to claim Air France compensation, how much Air France flight compensation you can receive, and how FlyPayout handles the case for you.
As a European carrier registered in France, all Air France flights are covered by EC 261 regardless of direction — including flights from New York, Tokyo, and French overseas territories. These are all covered routes with full EC 261 protection.
French law provides a 5-year limitation period — one of the longest in the EU — giving significantly more time than the 2-year limit in the Netherlands or 3 years in Germany. French courts have a strong pro-consumer track record on EC 261 claims, and France was the first EU country to rule that airline staff strikes are not extraordinary circumstances.
Standard EC 261 amounts apply:
| Flight distance | Air France compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | €250 |
| 1,500 km to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Over 3,500 km | €600 |
Here are examples on common Air France routes:
| Route | Distance | Compensation |
|---|---|---|
| Paris CDG to London Heathrow | ~350 km | €250 |
| Paris CDG to Rome | ~1,100 km | €250 |
| Paris CDG to Berlin | ~880 km | €250 |
| Paris CDG to Lisbon | ~1,450 km | €250 |
| Paris CDG to Athens | ~2,100 km | €400 |
| Paris CDG to Istanbul | ~2,250 km | €400 |
| Paris CDG to New York JFK | ~5,840 km | €600 |
| Paris CDG to Los Angeles | ~9,100 km | €600 |
| Paris CDG to Tokyo Haneda | ~9,710 km | €600 |
| Paris CDG to São Paulo | ~9,170 km | €600 |
| Paris Orly to Fort-de-France (Martinique) | ~6,860 km | €600 |
Air France operates routes to French overseas territories (Martinique, Guadeloupe, La Réunion, Mayotte, French Guiana). Many qualifying flights fall into the €600 band.
If your Air France flight arrives at the final destination 3 or more hours late at the scheduled time of arrival, you are entitled to Air France flight delay compensation. The delay is measured at arrival time, not at departure time.
Paris CDG is one of Europe's busiest airports and suffers from chronic congestion. French ATC strikes — among the most frequent in Europe — cause widespread disruptions. However, while ATC strikes are extraordinary circumstances (no compensation owed for delays caused by them), delays caused by Air France's own operational issues including technical faults, crew problems, and scheduling failures are not extraordinary and financial compensation applies.

If Air France cancels your flight and notifies you less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, you are entitled to Air France flight cancellation compensation at the same amounts, plus the right to choose between a full refund and rebooking on an alternative flight.

If Air France involuntarily denies you boarding due to an overbooked flight, boarding compensation must be paid immediately at the airport. The airline must first seek volunteers before involuntarily bumping any passenger.

Air France and KLM are sister airlines within the Air France-KLM Group and operate extensive codeshare flights. The operating carrier is always responsible under EC 261 — not the airline that sold the ticket. If you booked an Air France "AF" flight number but KLM operated the flight, your claim goes to KLM. Check your boarding pass for "Operated by" to confirm.
Air France Hop is Air France's regional subsidiary operating shorter European and domestic flights. Claims for Air France Hop-operated disruptions go to Air France Hop. FlyPayout handles claims against both Air France mainline and Air France Hop.
Air France's customer service team processes EC 261 claims more systematically than many carriers, but challenges remain. Response times typically run 4 to 8 weeks. If the claim is denied or not responded to within 8 weeks, you can contact Air France's customer relations department for escalation, or refer the claim to an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) body or national enforcement agency. Compensation claims typically take 30 to 90 days for processing after submission.
Air France legitimately invokes extraordinary circumstances for French ATC controller strikes — these are third-party events beyond the airline's control. However, the airline sometimes conflates ATC delays with its own operational failures. Air France staff strikes by its own pilots, cabin crew, or ground staff are not extraordinary — French courts have confirmed this. If a rejection cites "industrial action" without specifying whether it was ATC or airline staff, challenge it.
Air France may offer Flying Blue miles or vouchers instead of cash. Under EC 261, you have the right to insist on cash compensation. Vouchers are only acceptable with your explicit agreement.
Paris CDG is Air France's global connecting hub with multiple terminals (1, 2A–2G, 3). Connections between Terminal 2E (long-haul) and Terminal 2F or 2G (short-haul) require internal transit — an inbound delay can easily cause a missed connection.
If you miss your connection on a single ticket, compensation is based on the total journey distance and your delay at the final destination. A missed connection on a Rome–Paris–New York single booking means compensation calculated on the full Rome–New York distance (over 3,500 km = €600).

Regardless of the cause, Air France must provide care during delays. For delays exceeding 2 hours, airlines must provide free meals, refreshments, and accommodation if an overnight stay becomes necessary.
| Delay threshold | What you're entitled to |
|---|---|
| 2+ hours (flights up to 1,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| 3+ hours (flights 1,500 km to 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| 4+ hours (flights over 3,500 km) | Meals, refreshments, 2 phone calls or emails |
| Overnight stay required | Hotel accommodation plus transport to and from the hotel |
| 5+ hours | Right to abandon the journey plus full refund |
If Air France fails to provide hotel accommodation or meals, cover costs yourself, request reimbursement with receipts, and include these as additional expenses in your claim. The inconvenience caused by the airline's failure to provide care can also be included.
| Jurisdiction | Time limit |
|---|---|
| France (Air France's home country) | 5 years |
| Germany | 3 years (expires end of 3rd calendar year) |
| Netherlands (KLM codeshares) | 2 years |
| England and Wales | 6 years |
| Italy | 2 years |
France's 5-year limitation is among the most generous in the EU. For Air France flights departing from or arriving in the UK, the 6-year English limitation may apply. FlyPayout assesses the optimal jurisdiction for your claim.
FlyPayout handles the entire Air France compensation claim process for you.

Air France flight delay compensation ranges from €250 to €600 depending on flight distance. Short European routes qualify for €250. Mid-range routes such as Paris to Athens or Istanbul qualify for €400. Long-haul routes to New York, Tokyo, São Paulo, and French overseas territories qualify for the maximum €600 per person.
Yes. Flights from Martinique, Guadeloupe, La Réunion, French Guiana, Mayotte, and Saint-Martin are covered by EC 261 — these are EU outermost regions. Air France delay compensation of up to €600 applies for qualifying disruptions on these covered routes.
If you booked through Air France but KLM operated the flight, your claim goes to KLM. The operating carrier is always responsible under EC 261. Check your boarding pass for "Operated by" and contact the correct airline, or let FlyPayout determine the right entity.
ATC strikes are extraordinary circumstances — no cash compensation is owed for delays caused by them. However, Air France must still provide care including meals and hotel accommodation, plus rebooking and refund options. If the delay was partly caused by ATC and partly by the airline's own operations, compensation may still be owed for the non-extraordinary portion.
Yes. EC 261 applies to all Air France Hop-operated flights. FlyPayout handles claims against both Air France mainline and Air France Hop.
Air France is one of Europe's largest full-service airlines, with a network spanning six continents. If your flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you are entitled to up to €600 per person. With France's 5-year limitation period, even older disruptions are still claimable.
